The effect of vaginal sling plasties according to Zoedler and abdominal urethrocystopexies according to Marshall et al. on the intravesical and the intraurethral pressure as well as on the functional urethral length was evaluated in 30 stress incontinent females. There was no change of the pressures or the lengths after the operation compared with the values before the operation. All patients reported continence after the operation which was objectively confirmed by positive urethral closure pressures. The results support the theory given by Enhörning that successful surgical treatment of female stress urinary incontinence mainly is due to fixation or relocation of the proximal part of the urethra into the intraabdominal pressure sphere and not by elongation of the urethra.
