Abstract
To study the effect of blockade or resection of the inferior hypogastric plexus unilaterally on the urethral pressure profile, simultaneous urethrocystometry has been performed in 16 urge incontinent women. The results have been compared with recordings in 14 healthy women. No changes in the functional length of the urethra, the maximal urethral pressure, the bladder pressure or the shape of the urethral pressure profile were seen after the blockade or resection. However, the sensation of urge disappeared and bladder capacity was increased. In the urge incontinent women the tone of the uppermost part of the urethra was markedly lower compared with the women in the control group.
