Adult male rats have been subjected to cryptorchidism. After 9 weeks the testes were removed. These animals, intact, hypophysectomized, and castrated controls were bled weekly for LH and FSH radioimmunoassay. Both LH and FSH levels rose moderately, however, FSH surpassed the normal control values. Excision of the testes prompted a steep increase in a castrate pattern. Histologically, the seminiferous tubules were completely atrophic, but Leydig cells were still present. These findings are consistent with a greater heat sensitivity of the Leydig cells vs. seminiferous epithelium and indicate the importance of endogenous testosterone not only for LH but FSH suppression as well.
