In preliminary animal experiments lyophilized dura was fixed with tissue adhesives to the abdominal muscular layer in order to achieve sutureless closures of laparotomies. If the whole surface of the dura was painted with adhesive, no organization occurred. If, however, the adhesive was applied in form of a grid, ingrowth of cells could be observed and a satisfactory closure of the laparotomies was achieved. Clinically, this method was applied for reinforcement of large incisional hernias after nephrectomy or prostatectomy. The edges of the hernias were approximated by single interrupted sutures and the commercially available dura was attached by a grid of adhesive, painted on the dry dura by a roller made of teflon.
