The ability to cut and cauterize tissue makes the laser beam to a new surgical instrument. It could be used routinely, if suitable instruments would be developed. Until now surgical procedures could be carried out only by means of direct beams or by means of articulated arms. Therefore, our experiments, regarding resection of spleen, liver and kidney, were carried out on rats and on a pig, by means of the direct CO2-beams. Amputation of the kidney pole without clamping the supplying vessels as well as resection of the liver could be demonstrated, whereas resection of the spleen was impossible. An important progress was made recently, when a fully mobile and usable light scalpel and an endoscopic light probe was constructed.
