Abstract
In 22 patients with renal tumours changes of the renal parenchyma after pre-operational irradiation of the kidney with a dose of 4000 R were studied. The respective nephrectomy was carried out 21–30 days after the last irradiation dose. Simultaneously an analysis of analogous changes was carried out in 27 patients who had not been subjected to the radiation treatment. Apart from the changes in the tumour tissue the changes in the tissue unaffected by the tumour were chiefly studied. It was ascertained that the irradiation affects, above all, medium and minor renal vessels and the epithelium of the renal tubules. No fresh changes of the glomerules were observed. If the vessels were already showing arteriosclerosis they were affected by irradiation much more intensively.
