Urologia Internationalis was founded in 1955 and has retained the same title throughout its 65 years of existence.

Prof. Manfred P. Wirth joined the only Editor at the time, Prof. Dieter Hauri (1988–2005) in 1998. This team of Editors was expanded by Prof. Massimo Porena, who was an Editor between 2000 and 2013. Oliver W. Hakenberg became Associate Editor in 2002 and Editor in 2006, David Castro-Diaz joined in 2007 and Bernd Wullich in 2012.

Now the time has come to say goodbye to two Editors, Prof. Wirth and Prof. Castro-Diaz, who independently decided to resign by the end of 2020.

Along with its field, Urologia Internationalis has grown rapidly over the past 30 years. Prof. Wirth, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Urology at the University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus in Dresden, was the active leader of the editorial team. He shared his comprehensive knowledge as a clinician and researcher and his vast experience in conducting and publishing science with the other Editors. His international reputation in Europe and the USA helped to attract international authors to publish in Urologia Internationalis. He was the driving force that transformed the journal into the independent forum for clinically oriented research that it is today – recognized and appreciated by the urological community internationally. As an external sign of this development under Manfred Wirth’s leadership the impact factor has risen considerably. Manfred Wirth retired from active medical work in 2017. After 22 years with Urologia Internationalis, it is now his wish to retire from this commitment as well.

Professor Castro-Diaz, an expert in Functional and Female Urology, was brought into the editorial team by Professor Wirth. He is Professor of Urology and the Head of the Functional Urology Unit at the University Hospital of the Canary Islands (Spain). At Urologia Internationalis, he has always been a very reliable and respected Editor. Prof. Castro-Diaz has decided to end his term as Editor in view of various commitments, e.g. as the General Secretary of the International Continence Society, that keep him more than busy.

On behalf of Karger Publishers, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to both resigning Editors for their service to Urologia Internationalis. I am particularly indebted to Professor Wirth for his enormous contributions and his tireless work as the leading Editor over so many years. To both leaving Editors I extend my very best wishes for their future.

It is with great pleasure that we welcome Prof. Maximilian Burger, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Urology of the University of Regensburg, Germany, as a new Editor. He has already built strong ties to Urologia Internationalis as a member of the Board of Reviewing Editors.

We are certain that the expertise and input of Prof. Hakenberg, Prof. Wullich, and Prof. Burger will ensure the journal’s continued success and we look forward to a mutually rewarding collaboration as Urologia Internationalis enters its next chapter.
