A trial was conducted to assess the activity of nalidixic acid in patients in a urological clinic. It turned out that after a therapy of 2 g a day during 5 days for an infection caused by an organism which was sensitive to the drug before treatment (no growth at 50 γ/ml culture media or less) 11 patients out of 27 had sterile urine. For the group treated with 4 g a day this number was 11 patients out of 22. No. side-effects were noted. We feel that this drug, considering the rapid increase in resistance should only be used after sensitivity of the respective organism has been determined. The use of this drug in a maintenance therapy longer than a fortnight is not advised for chronic patients.
